The first installment of what Dennis Redmond promises will be a series of videos on global transformations that are only superficially visible in the Occupy Wall Street and Arab Spring. Redmond, a prolific writer and teacher, with degrees in Comparative Literature and Communications, is well known among Adorno fans as providing one of the best English translations of Negative Dialectics - a translation that, as he explains, sits unpublished on his website since the University of Minnesota has the sole translation rights to that work. Fittingly then, Redmond focuses his energy in this video on talking about the digital commons. It is prefaced by footage from the social unrest around the world and his own personal description of what precarity means for a first world citizen. His current interest in video games shows through in the final minute or so. As I’ve read his thoughts on the challenge posed by BRIC developmental states, I look forward to the future installments. Meanwhile, it is a good, if raw, illustration of what many of us are feeling today.
